The Aoudad

Barbary sheep in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

A mountain hunt, by rifle and on foot. Under the official supervision of the Agence Nationale des Eaux et Forêts.

The species

The Barbary sheep

Endemic to North Africa, the Barbary sheep — Ammotragus lervia, internationally known as Aoudad — stands today among the rarest big-game hunts in the world.

Morocco remains one of the last grounds where it may be hunted in its native habitat, on mature rams, in strict compliance with Moroccan hunting legislation.

§

The hunt

Glassing, then the stalk

  • The ground

    The Moroccan Atlas

Sheer ridges above two thousand metres, open cliffs facing the plain, scree and argan. The native ground of the ram — demanding, isolated, silent.

  • The method

    Stalk & rifle

Days spent glassing with the spotting scope, followed by a quiet stalk to shooting distance. Rifle, calibre adapted to mountain big game. Optics provided on request.

  • The form

    A serious hunt

Dry climate, sustained altitude, long marches on mineral slopes. Good physical condition is required. This hunt rewards patience and precision over speed.
